Full-fibre broadband now available to over 4.2 million UK homes says Ofcom

The collective effort to achieve super-fast, full-fibre broadband across the UK has escalated over the past year. According to new figures published in Ofcom’s Connected Nations summer update, full-fibre broadband is now available to over 4.2 million homes in the UK.

What is Fibre Broadband?

Fibre Broadband can be connected in two ways. Fibre to the Premises or ‘FTTP’ delivers a complete fibre broadband connection directly to a site for increased speeds and reliable connection. FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) delivers a fibre connection to the green cabinets located on the street, with a copper network then connecting the cabinet to the premise. FTTP removes the need for a copper-based network, providing future-proof connectivity.

The report from Ofcom continues to state that fibre-broadband is now available to 14% of UK homes, increasing from 12% since their spring update published in May. This is a positive result in supporting plans to close the traditional copper-based network throughout the UK by 2025.

Finding the best broadband for you

Depending on your location, you still may be waiting for a full-fibre internet connection. However, there are many broadband options that provide fast connectivity speeds for you and your business. In fact, according to Ofcom, 98% of UK properties can access ‘decent’ broadband from a fixed line, providing download speeds of 10 Mbit/s and upload speeds of 1 Mbit/s.
